Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging

We believe that everyone deserves to be seen, heard and valued. We are proud to foster a culture where our people can bring their whole selves to work, thrive in their careers, and feel part of something bigger, regardless of their identity, background, or lived experience.

We’re embedding Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDI&B) into every part of our organisation, from how we hire and support our people to how we care for our patients and communities.

We’re here to help our communities live healthier, happier, and fairer lives. At the heart of that vision is a commitment to EDI&B. Whether you’re a colleague, patient, volunteer or partner, you’ll find that respect, inclusion, and compassion are part of who we are.

BPride 09.jpgOur people are the heartbeat of DHU. When we embrace the diversity of our workforce, we unlock new ideas, foster more profound empathy, and gain richer perspectives. That’s how we deliver care that’s not just excellent, but also equitable and culturally competent.

From frontline teams to boardrooms, EDI&B is the thread that connects us all.

Inclusive recruitment

We’re building a workforce that reflects the communities we serve. Through transparent and inclusive recruitment practices, we offer everyone a fair opportunity to grow and succeed.

Training and development

Progression belongs to everyone. We invest in training and career development so that our colleagues, at all levels and from all backgrounds, can reach their full potential.

Employee network groups

BPride 02.jpgOur employee-led networks provide safe spaces for connection, advocacy, and action. These groups serve as a platform for positive change and a voice for individuals to be heard. Whether you’re looking for peer support or want to lead on inclusion, there’s a place for you.

Community engagement

We work hand-in-hand with local communities to understand their needs and break down barriers to healthcare. Our EDI&B efforts go beyond our organisation; they’re about creating better outcomes for everyone we serve.

What is an Active Bystander?

An active bystander is someone who notices when someone’s behaviour is inappropriate and chooses to intervene and offer assistance. Anyone can be an active bystander, regardless of their role. At DHU, we do not tolerate unacceptable behaviours and encourage staff to stand up and advocate for themselves and others.

Your expectations as a DHU employee

If you witness inappropriate behaviours that do not align with our behaviour framework:

  • If safe to do so, challenge the behaviour by speaking to the person responsible either at the time or at an appropriate time and place, and where it is safe to do so.
  • Take steps to move the colleague who is at risk of harm away from the situation.
  • Support those impacted - let them know that the behaviour you witnessed is unacceptable.
  • Signpost individuals to support available
  • Check in with the recipient of the behaviour after it has taken place.
  • Take appropriate action after any incident to prevent the situation from arising again.

Join us on our EDI&B journey

We’re proud of how far we’ve come, but there is always more to do. That’s why your voice matters. Whether you’re a candidate considering your next step, a current colleague looking to connect, or someone passionate about inclusion, we want you to be part of our story.

Together, we’re creating a culture where everyone feels seen, supported and celebrated.
